Natural Pool Maintenance by Oásis Biosistema

Ensure your natural pool remains pristine and balanced with expert maintenance from Oásis Biosistema. Discover tailored solutions to maintain water quality, ecosystem health, and longevity.

The Importance of Taking Care of Your Ornamental Pond

Each pond is unique, and it’s important to remember that an ornamental pond is a living ecosystem that will always require care. Maintenance starts with you.

In addition to monitoring water quality and the health of the fish, it’s crucial to watch for potential blockages in the sump (filtration system) caused by excess waste and organic matter. This monitoring is essential for effective filtration, ensuring the water remains clean and healthy.

Ornamental ponds without regular maintenance become vulnerable to pathogens, leading to poor water quality and increased fish mortality. Therefore, every pond requires care to maintain its biological balance and provide an optimal environment for the life it contains.

Tips and Warnings for a Healthy and Beautiful Pond

Do not overfeed your fish. Uneaten food turns into ammonia, polluting the pond. Overfed fish also produce more waste, further degrading water quality.

Feed your fish on the side opposite the sump, in controlled amounts, based on the number of fish, once every two days (or at most, once daily). The recommended daily amount is 2-3% of the biomass during summer and around 10g in winter per kilogram of fish.

Avoid overstocking fish. Although fish are essential for the pond’s biological balance and water movement, overcrowding leads to excess waste, which causes ammonia and nitrite levels to rise uncontrollably, harming water quality and fish health.

The recommended fish quantity is 1kg of fish per cubic meter of water.

Check the source of new fish, plants, or animals before introducing them to your pond. They could carry diseases, parasites, or harmful microorganisms.

Regularly replenish water levels to maintain the pond’s health and ensure filtration equipment works effectively. Water loss due to plants, stones, and sand is common, so a float valve is essential to prevent the system from running dry and causing equipment damage.

Avoid chemical products near your pond. Keep oils and sunscreen, for instance, away from the water.

Do not leave food remnants near or in the pond. Food decomposition can alter water parameters and disrupt the ecosystem, leading to sick fish or green water.

Control aquatic plant growth. While aquatic plants can help maintain balance, unchecked growth can overwhelm the space and harm other life forms.

Avoid objects that might block water inlets to the sump or damage the liner, such as sharp or large items.

Ensure proper water circulation and filtration. Without proper circulation, water will not be oxygenated or cleaned, leading to harmful microorganisms proliferating quickly. Just a few days without proper care can “ruin” your pond.

Damages Caused by Negligence or Misuse

Warranty does not cover damage caused by impact from sharp objects, failure to follow instructions, neglect, or misuse. Stable electrical connections are the client’s responsibility, and damage caused by improper electrical supply is not covered.

Our ponds are designed for 24/7 equipment operation, using low-energy equipment and machine-room ventilation. We are not responsible for water quality, fish health, or plant condition if equipment is turned off—even briefly—due to external causes.

Neglecting maintenance as outlined above may be considered client responsibility, and resulting damages will not be covered.

A technical inspection is essential every six months to assess the pond and equipment condition. Costs are available upon request.

Nitrogen Cycle in Ponds

1. Understanding the Pond Environment

Ornamental ponds are enclosed systems, unlike natural, open bodies of water. Without natural water renewal, they require proper maintenance to avoid issues. Respect the cycling period to establish a healthy ecosystem.

2. Establishing Nitrifying Bacteria

A newly built pond must allow time for aerobic nitrifying bacteria to multiply and form colonies within the biological filter media. These bacteria are vital to maintaining water balance and the nitrogen cycle.

3. Ammonia Formation

Organic waste, such as fish waste, urine, fallen leaves, and food remnants, decomposes into ammonia. This is the starting point of the nitrogen cycle.

4. Nitrification Steps

Step 1: Nitrosomonas bacteria convert ammonia into nitrites.

Step 2: Nitrobacter bacteria transform nitrites into nitrates, which become nutrients for aquatic plants.

5. Denitrification

Anaerobic bacteria convert nitrates into nitrogen gas, which is released into the atmosphere, completing the cycle.

6. Maintaining Balance

A good biological filter is essential to ensure sufficient nitrifying bacteria to process ammonia effectively. In smaller ponds, partial water changes during dry seasons help control nitrate accumulation.

Damages Caused by Objects, Accidents, Misuse, or Force Majeure

The warranty does not cover damages caused by impacts from sharp objects, improper use that does not align with our instructions, lack of maintenance, misuse, negligence, humidity, water entering the ozone generator cabinet, incorrect electrical supply, or the use of abrasive materials.

Electrical issues, such as unstable current, are considered misuse or negligence. It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure a stable electrical connection.

Our ponds are designed for 24-hour operation of equipment, using low-energy consumption systems and ventilated machine rooms. For this reason, we do not assume responsibility for changes to water quality, fish health, or plant vitality if the equipment is turned off—even for short periods—due to external causes unrelated to OÁSIS Biosistema.

Failure to perform maintenance and care for your pond, following the advice and warnings above, will be considered negligence, and any resulting damage will be the customer’s responsibility.
